Mission Update – June 2019

Hello Springs Family!

We want to give a mission update specific to giving and the recent opportunities we’ve had the unique privilege to explore.  In May, we met as a church body for a Family Meeting to present a financial update and a new opportunity with McKenna (if you would like information on that meeting, please click here). The purpose of this article is to provide you all with an update regarding these opportunities.

Thank you to each person and family who responded to our ask for “100% participation”.

Before we remind everyone of our financial scenario, as well as update our body on our current finances, we first want to say thank you. Regardless of the outcome, we know that many of you took our ask of “100% Participation” seriously. By that, you understood we were asking for each of our committed families to go before the Lord to see if and how He might have you, and potentially your family, financially respond. Our goal from the start was to honor 2 Corinthians 9:7 and we could not be more grateful to our body for taking that ask seriously and sacrificially. “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” As a Leadership Team, our Trustees could not be more encouraged by and grateful for each of you who responded. While no member of our Leadership Team knows who gave or how much was given, we know that many of you prayerfully and sacrificially gave – thank you for supporting the mission of God making disciples through this body.

A recap of the two financial goals we asked the Springs body to prayerfully consider in May.

Our current ministry plans require a budget of $50,000 per month (for information on how we arrived at this number, please see the video from the Family Meeting we held in May 2019). Monthly giving in 2019 has averaged approximately $30,000 per month. Therefore, we are currently operating with a monthly financial deficit of $20,000. Over the course of a year, this would run The Springs a cash deficit of $240,000; however, this number does not account for any year-end giving. While we acknowledge God can and does fund His mission through year-end giving, we feel it best not to budget assuming a year end surge in giving for consistent operating purposes. In light of that, we came to the body and asked us all to prayerfully consider responding to meet two financial goals:

  • Goal #1: Increase monthly giving from $30,000 to $50,000 (eliminate $20,000 monthly deficit)
  • Goal #2: Consider one-time donations totaling $120,000 for the renovation of McKenna’s Gym

We shared that if we were unable to meet our first goal, we would move towards solving our monthly deficit through the removal of pastoral staff. In addition, we shared that all resources given, even one-time donations, will first go towards meeting the obligations of our current budget before investing in improvement projects to McKenna’s Gym. It is our strong conviction that staff offer the most effective means of making disciples.

Goal 1 is to increase monthly giving from $30,000 to $50,000.
+ Recurring giving has increased from $30,000 to $33,000.

The chief way our team tracks recurring giving is through online recurring payments. While this number doesn’t take into account increased monthly cash/check giving, it is generally an accurate reflection of the monthly giving patterns. Over the course of a year, this $3,000 per month totals $36,000. If over the next few months our cashflow shows a different leveling out point than approximately $33,000 per month, we will update the body.

Goal 2 is to receive $120,000 one-time gifts renovating the McKenna Gym.
+ The body responded with $120,000 in one-time gifts.

Our body responded by stewarding $120,000 in one-time donations towards The Springs. Our original goal was to utilize this money to renovate the McKenna Gym into a more ministry effective/usable space. However, because we did not meet our first goal of balancing cashflow, we are going to utilize this money to cover the cashflow deficit to financially sustain our current staff through the end of 2019.

We will also pull out approximately $10,000 to create an office space in the McKenna Gym that will double as breakout rooms for mid-week ministry meetings. This means we will continue using McKenna’s auditorium as our current large gathering space on Sunday mornings, and the Gym will continue acting as the environment for our 2nd – 5th grade Kids Ministry.

We will move forward starting gym renovation in a phased approach with future donations.

Because we plan to utilize the current one-time gifts to cover our cashflow commitments through the end of 2019, all additional one-time donations will go towards the renovation of the McKenna Gym. The creation of a large gathering space, breakout rooms, and a pastoral meeting area will come at a cost of $110,000. As resources come in, we will take a phased approach of introducing these changes, with the first phase focusing on offices and breakout rooms, which has been allocated. The second phase will establish the largest part of the gym as an auditorium.

To begin the second phase requires $60,000 in one-time gifts, which must be received by the end of August 2019.

Why August? The auditorium renovation phase will take approximately 1½ months. This will provide about 6 months of use before our lease agreement will end. We don’t believe any less than 6 months will be a good steward of the time and resources. We have no guarantee of an additional year renewal on the gym space and all renovations are designed for portability and future use elsewhere. We are partnering with experts to ensure these funds are invested well and we’ll only move forward with their guidance and experience.

We will maximize every dollar to continue on our path to make disciples. God is using the faithfulness of the people that call The Springs home, and it is exciting to see where He’s taking us. As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know. You can do so by emailing Dan Cowan at [email protected].
